Cusco is the first step to get to Machu Picchu, every day arrive flights from Lima , Arequipa, Juliaca to Cusco airport (Alejandro velazco Astete airport). Machu Picchu has 500 visits per day, you can book a tour with a travel agency or go by yourself and hire a guide , the tour takes around 2 hours but after the tour you can stay there and admire the beautiful scenery.
