The Carnival is an annual celebration ,In the late 19th
century, the "cordões" (literally laces in Portuguese) were
introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were groups of people
who would parade through the streets while playing music and
dancing.
The Sambadrome has a total capacity for some 50 thousand
people and there are VIP Cabins, or Covered Boxes, seating
and popular stands. The fourteen "escolas de samba" parade
competitively each year.The "blocos" have become an
important part of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival and consist of a
group of people who dress in costumes according to certain
themes or celebrate the Carnival in a particular way. A wide
variety of samba schools, blocos and bands can be seen
during the celebrations along the streets.
