The Colca canyon is reportedly the deepest in the world, thought
to be twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA. Unlike most of the Grand
Canyon, portions of the Colca canyon are habitable, with pre-Colombian terraced
fields still supporting agriculture and human life. Located 148 km northeast of
Arequipa and about 4 h drive. To follow this circuit travelers must head for the
northwestern part of Arequipa to Yura until reaching the cove known as “Mirador
de los Cóndores” (natural outlook). From there it is possible to make out the
snow-capped summits of Ampato and Sabancaya. The descent continues down to
Chivay.
DAY 1: LEAVING AREQUIPA
Early in the morning, after breakfast, leave Arequipa to a journey to the
center of the Earth, our end Colca Canyon, towards nor west direction behind
snow-covered Chachani, Yura, small valley with thermal springs, see wild
vicuñas in Pampa Cañahuas national reserve, Alpacas & llamas in Tocra, some
birds like flamingoes, ibis, andean gooze, ducks, Andean eagle "Kara Kara"
view point of the Volcanoes and snow covered mountains in Patapampa (4,800
m.)(15,000ft.), See the Ampato, Sabancaya, Walca Walca, etc.) Chivay Capital
of the valley. Afternoon visit to the thermal springs & pools in La Calera.
(Admission to the pools not included, about $5 per person). Overnight at
selected accommodation. (L, D)
DAY 2: COLCA CANYON
Early morning after breakfast leave for a full day excursion. We departure
to Cruz del Condor where you can appreciate the flight of the condors. Also
the Geographical Impressive scene, view of the depth of the canyon, typical
people, incredible amount of Pre Inca terraces still farmed, colonial
churches embroidered dresses, very good food novo Andean and visit to the
village of Cabanaconde, in the afternoon return to your accommodation.
Overnight at selected accommodation. (B, L, D)
DAY 3: COLCA CANYON - AREQUIPA
On the way back to Chivay, visit to the Mirador of Chinina, where we will
find the famous Hanging Tombs and the Hanging Bridge of Sifón that joins the
town of Yanque with Coporaque. At right, the beautiful village of Coporaque,
the semi-circular terraces known as the "Amphitheatre" view of the
mountains, a small canyon which houses the grain depots Colcas or sacred as
wasp nests in inaccessible places. In the afternoon return to Arequipa (B,L)
